NON PAYMENT OF TAXES BAFFLES PRIME MINISTER

Jan 28, 2017 07:32AM

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JANUARY 242017- GIS: Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell says he is at a loss to understand why former Finance Minister Nazim Burke did not pay his taxes for several years.

Government figures show that Burke, Finance Minister under the previous NDC government, did not pay taxes for 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Appearing in his first live television interview recently, Dr. Mitchell said a 30,000 dollar tax relief was offered to Burke, who was due to receive more than 70,000 dollars in gratuity.

“Mr. Buke wrote to the Finance Minister, that’s myself, asking for relief on the fact that he did not pay,” the Prime Minister said.

“I would love to understand how someone could be Minister of Finance of a country, that has tax liabilities of your family for 2011, 2012 and 2014 and you did not pay, and you are calling on us to pay? I cannot understand it. When the penalties are imposed on the gentleman, he writes me as Minister of Finance asking for relief, and within a week he got a letter from me giving him over $30,000 in relief, and this is the same man Brother Burke is calling a wicked man”.

Mr. Burke appeared on GBN's To the Point, accusing the government of not paying his gratuity.

However, figures from the Ministry of Finance show that Opposition MPs received gratuity payments of more than 70,000 dollars each in 2013 and 2014, while government MP's only received their payments late last year

.

“No member of the present government got payment until 2016, not even the Prime Minister then and Minister of Finance. But members of the Opposition got paid since 2013, some of them got some monies in 2014,” Prime Minister Mitchell added.
