ST GEORGE'S, GRENADA, MONDAY, 9 JANUARY 2017, GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SERVICE (GIS): - Preparatory work for the construction of the Lanse bridge in the Town of Gouyave has begun, as the St. John MP Alvin Dabreo is set to deliver another major project in the fishing capital.
On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 January, 2017, a team of Chinese engineers and construction workers began erecting a reinforced steel walkover/footpath that will connect the northern and southern parts of the town, when the bridge is demolished in the coming weeks.
The bridge which has been in operation for more than 50 years is earmarked for reconstruction due to structural and physical deterioration over the years.
The new bridge which is expected to cost more than one million Eastern Caribbean dollars, will be constructed by the international Chinese construction firm Qingdao Fu Haiyang Construction Group Co. Ltd.
Qingdao Fu Haiyang Construction Group Co. Ltd, is the said company that successfully constructed the new Hubble bridge in Gouyave Estate, St. John, following its collapse in September 2015.
In an exclusive interview with State of Affairs, GIS flagship program, in November 2016, the St. John MP said the new Hubble bridge is wider and much stronger and was constructed ahead of the pending demolition and construction of the current Lanse bridge, to facilitate the motoring public and pedestrians alike.
The project which is expected to create some employment to residents of St. John and St. Mark will be executed in three phases.
