MOH COMMENCES ANNUAL FOOD-HANDLERS TRAINING

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, JULY 12, 2016, GOVERNMENT INFORMATION SERVICE (GIS): Grenadians who are interested in becoming certified food-handlers will have an opportunity to enroll in the Ministry of Health /PAHO-HACCP certified program.

The Ministry’s annual food-handlers training program, which covers nine modules, is expected to start today in St. Andrew at the environmental health office on Ben Jones Street and continues on July 14, 19 & 21.

The training will cover the following topics;

 Introduction to Food-safety.

  1. Personal Hygiene.
  2. Purchasing, Receiving
  3. Safe Food Storage Practices.
  4. Safe reheating thawing and freezing
  5. Cleaning & Sanitation.
  6. Vector Control
  7. Food Safety Legislation.
  8. Introduction to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).

 One of the person’s spearheading the exercise is senior environmental health officer Francis Balwant who said the main objective of the training is to impact knowledge to food handlers on approved methods of preparation and vending of foods for human consumption.

He added that participants will be taught how to improve on personal hygiene practices and sanitation standards where food is prepared and offered for sale, to prevent and control the occurrences of food borne illnesses among consumers

The target group is food-handlers including itinerant food handlers involved in the preparation and selling of food for human consumption. 

The training will include, lectures, via power point presentations, interactive session’s, handouts and evaluation.

Training will be conducted in St David’s at the natural works: on July 13, 18 & 20, St George’s at (MOH): July 19, 20 & 21, St Patrick’s at St Patrick’s R.C. School: July 20, 25 & 27 and St John/St Mark Gouyave Fish-market conference room:July 26, 27 & 28. 

All the training sessions will be conducted from 1-4:pm.
